AS I STUDY MY REFLECTION in the full-length mirror in my bedroom, I attempt to will the butterflies in my belly to cease movement. They refuse to obey me. I’ve been on edge and antsy ever since I woke up this morning.

Ruby left around 5:00 pm yesterday for her weekend with Tommy, and I had the apartment to myself. I had hoped Dexter could come over for dinner last night, but he had a party at the bar he had to work. I ended up eating alone and thinking about Dexter the entire night.

There’s a knock at my door and the butterflies in my belly take flight again.

I take one last look at my summer dress. It’s a warm spring day, and Dexter told me to dress for an afternoon outside, but he didn’t tell me what we’re doing. I want to look nice, and I figured a casual summer dress is perfect.

The dress is pale pink with a hint of lace around the neckline and hem of the skirt. It’s simple and fun. I’m wearing comfortable flats and a silver necklace with a heart charm my mom picked out as a gift from Ruby a couple of years ago, and my small diamond stud earrings. Nothing too fancy, but perfect for a casual first date.

I apply a light coat of lip gloss just as there’s another knock on the door. I rush out of my room calling out as I go. “Coming!”

I open the door and suck in a breath. Damn he looks good. He’s wearing a pair of khaki shorts with a snug, plain white t-shirt that reveals every single ridge and valley of his chest and broad shoulders. He looks so effortlessly casual yet intentionally sexy. He’s clean shaven and smiling down at me like he’s won a prize.

Hell, I think I’m the one who won a prize.

My smile grows as he steps forward, wrapping an arm around my waist, and pulling me in for a light kiss.

“You look beautiful, Daystar,” he whispers against my lips.

“Thank you,” I breathe into him. God, I forgot how much I love hearing him call me Daystar. He hasn’t said it much since we reunited, and hearing it now only stirs up my already overly active belly flutters more.

“Are you ready?” He asks before he kisses my cheek, then my jawline, and down my neck. “Damn, you smell good, too.”

I laugh before pushing back on his chest until he releases me. The smile on his face is enough to make me want to drag him back to my bedroom instead of going out. But I want to go out with him. If things go well, there will be time for that later. “Let me grab my sweater and purse, then I’m ready.”

I rush back to my bedroom and grab my things, taking one last deep breath in an attempt to calm my nerves before I head back out. When I get to the door, I see a large basket at his feet that I didn’t notice when he first arrived.
